The City of St. Marys operates a
full-time Fire Department with 13 cross-trained Firemen/Paramedics, which is
supplemented by a team of 15 Auxiliary Firefighters. The employees are
very active in arson investigation, fire safety inspections, juvenile fire
setter program, and fire prevention which includes a full-size Fire Safety
House.
Each employee, except the Chief,
works a 24-hour shift, is off 48-hours, and then reports again for another
24-hour shift. The efforts of the 13 full-time Firefighters/Paramedics are
supplemented by 15 Auxiliary Firefighters who respond to structure fires, assist
on squad runs, and provide shift coverage when needed.
The Department is also rated a
Class IV by the I.S.O. (Insurance Service Organization) which makes St. Marys
one of the lowest rated departments in the area (the lower the rating the
better). The I.S.O. ratings are
used to determine how well equipped a fire department is for fighting fires of
all sizes. Local businesses and industries are encouraged to contact their
insurance company to see if their premiums can be reduced due to our Class IV
rating.

Fire Prevention Week - Each
October one week is designated as Fire Prevention Week. During this week
Fire Department members visit each school and instruct a fire prevention
education class for all students grades K-6. The class includes a video
lecture with handouts which include smoke detectors and gift certificates to
local restaurants. Also during this week, all preschool students visit the
Fire Department for a tour of our building plus an educational trip through the
Fire Safety House.
To schedule a tour of the Fire
Department or an education class for your organization, please contact the Fire
Department.
The St. Marys Fire Department also
gets involved with the Prom Promise whereby students are faced with mock
situations of what can happen when a drunk driver is behind the wheel, i.e., a
wrecked car may be displayed, students play victims, and emergency services are
called.
