The title of this department sums
up their duties. If there is a general service needed by the community
which is not specifically covered by another department, this task is often
assigned to the General Services Department. The duties of General
Services personnel range from maintaining streets and performing carpentry or
masonry work, to the pulling of weeds and watering of plants.
Maintaining the streets, alleys,
and parking lots occupies much of their time. There are 42 miles of streets, 60 blocks of alleys, and several public parking lots that this Department maintains. The streets, alleys, and parking lots are crack sealed,
patched, graded, and swept in order to keep them in top-notch condition. Other regular duties of the
Department include:
-
Storm Drainage System - cleaning
and repairing catch basins, cleaning ditches, and jetting storm sewers.
Catch basins are checked for needed repairs each Spring.

BRUSH PICKUP:
The City of St. Marys performs a limited monthly brush pickup within the City limits on the 1st Wednesday of each month.
The brush must be placed at the curb (no alley pickups) by 7:00 a.m. on the 1st Wednesday of the month.
The Department also assists the
Parks Department on an as-needed basis as this is generally a one-man department
with additional employees only during the summer months. General Services
assists with hauling materials, installing fences, mowing, etc.
The Superintendent of General
Services also oversees the operation of the City Garage. City Garage
personnel includes one full-time Mechanic and a City Mechanic/General Services
Worker. Together, they are responsible for the daily upkeep and repairs of
City vehicles/equipment. By performing these tasks in-house, the City is
able to save on downtime and labor costs. The City Garage Fund is an
internal service fund with the cost of repairs being charged back to the
department owning the particular vehicle or piece of equipment.
