Ohio BWC Administrator, Steve Buehrer, was on hand today at the City Fire Department to issue a Safety Grant check of $29,829.08 to Mayor Patrick McGowan. The check is for the purchase of a Stryker Power ambulance cot that raises and lowers the patient with the touch of a button which has proven to reduce spinal loading, resulting in reduced injuries, lost workdays, and workers’ compensation. The Ohio BWC matches every employer dollar with three dollars on the purchase of equipment to substantially reduce or eliminate injuries and illnesses.
We now have a fillable, self-calculating Form EZ for individuals and joint filers. The form accommodates the majority of our taxpayers. The name of the municipality must be applied before the form will calculate the tax. The form must also be printed and delivered to our office. We do not have electronic filing.

Pursuant to the passage of Amended Substitute House Bill 5 in December 2014, new State mandated municipal income tax guidelines have been established, effective with tax returns due for tax years beginning January 1, 2016 and after.
Mark Ernst, a 23 year veteran of the Police Department, was recently promoted to Chief of Police. Mark has a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice and has served in the Army with the military police. Chris Green has been promoted to Police Sergeant. Chris has 12 years of service with the Police Department and has an Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice and also served in the Army with the military police. Congratulations!
In 2013, Dave Sprague, the City of St. Marys most senior employee, completed 35 years of service with the City. Dave is presently the Superintendent of the Water and Sewer Departments. He started employment with the City in 1978 as an Operator In Training at the Water Plant and over the years has served as a Lab Technician, Plant Operations Coordinator, and Superintendent of the Water and Sewer Plants. He currently holds Class III certifications in water supply and wastewater treatment.
The St. Marys Optimist Winterfest was held December 8th. In addition, the Festival of Lights, sponsored by St. Marys Community Partnership, began on December 8th and continues through Saturday, December 21st. The St. Marys Community Partnership will be hosting the Festival of Lights at the High Street Park. It will start in conjunction with the date of St. Marys’ Optimist Club’s Winterfest on Sunday, December 8th and continue then until Saturday, December 21st. The “Festival of Lights” will be open to the public at the High Street Park in St. Marys, Ohio, with hours of operation from 6 PM to 9 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.

The City of St. Marys Police Department is proud to have joined forces with the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office and Wapakoneta Police Department to hold an all day, bi-annual, women’s self-defense and firearms safety class.
In June, the St. Marys Community Public Library held Touch a Truck day. The public was able to explore various City vehicles from a Fire truck to Police car, dump truck, backhoe, street sweeper, and lineman truck. Fun was had by all!

The industrial substation, located adjacent to the AAP facility, has been renamed as the LORE SUBSTATION in honor of Chet Lore. Chet, who recently died, was a long time employee of the City of St. Marys and was involved in all aspects of electrical distribution, including Power Plant operations. The City of St. Marys has long been recognized as the hometown of Galen Cisco who had a long career in major league baseball and was a coach on two World Series Championship teams. Mr. Cisco has donated many hours to the youth of St. Marys and serves as an example to the youth of what may be accomplished in an athletic career. The Auglaize County Soil Water and Conservation District, St. Marys Memorial High School, and Vehorn Landscaping donated time, materials, and labor for reforestation seedlings to be used at parks and natural areas in St.
Spectrum Engineering Corporation out of Auburn, Indiana, was awarded the contract to perform an Electrical System Evaluation Study of the City’s electric system. The study will be broken down into phases. Utilizing the verified City data as input information, the Transmission and Distribution System will be modeled and analyzed in Easy Power. Recent renovations were made at the Fire Department to increase efficiency and productivity. All of the older windows were upgraded to energy efficient double pane. Finally, we do not have to use an ice scraper on the inside of the windows to see out.
We also remodeled the front office area which created a better flow and more open environment. New cabinetry was installed; allowing files, printers, and fax machines to be in one area. This eliminated time running from one room to another to obtain critical information.
